AFL Finals Week 4 - Hawks Happy

Despite desperate denials by deluded Dockers fans, the astute footy judgement of Uglybustards was proven correct on the last Satdee in September.

Lack of scoring finesse hurt Freo, with small forward Ballas a culprit much like Milney in the Saints losses. In defence Zac Dawson's pitiful stats (0 kicks, 7 handballs) just didn't stack up against his counterpart at the other end in Brian Lake (16k, 6hb). It was justice that Lake received the Norm Smith, as the other contender in Gunston had the unfair advantage of having Dawson on him. But it was a pity that we didn't get a Norman for Gunston.

Zac Dawson unlucky to miss out on Norm Smith medal for Hawthorn
In Lyon's four GFs his teams have now kicked 9.14, 10.8, 7.10 and 8.14.

Meanwhile Hawthorn, while 5th best defensive team, were far and away the most potent, scoring a telling 25% more than Freo over the season.

For Lyon's part he says he won't crumble.  I would, however, humbly suggest he seeks out a good head-shrink before pre-season, and reads the Malcolm Blight coaching instruction manual on how to kick a goal.

The experienced Hawks have proved themselves a very hard team to beat with their excellent draft recruiting topped up at the trade table with Lake, Gunston, Guerra, Burgoyne and Hale. Can't see those players wanting to go to Melbourne.  The AFL "social" system remains compromised on this point, with the strong clubs attracting trades and free / restricted agents while the lesser clubs are pretty much doomed.

Uglybustards Tipping Comp...

Congratulations to Sam Griggs who streeted the field and set new records in this year's competition with a winning margin of 6, and a remarkable finish of 27th out of 495,027 tipsters on the overall footytips.com.au ladder. His score of 161 out of a possible 208 at 77.4% tipping success rate was not an Uglybustards record, with Longee in 2012 (162/208 @ 77.9%) and Griggsy in 2011 (155/196 @ 79.1%) a smidgeon better, as can be seen in the Hall of Fame.

Sam took the lead from Andy in round 10 and was never headed. He takes home $231 and first choice of an Uglybustards T-shirt, Coffee Mug or Executive Pen.

On to the minor places and powerful completed yet another excellent season of tipping to finish 2nd, after his 4th and again runner-up places the past two years. Powerful tipped 155/208 @ 74.5%. Third place on the podium goes to Swans / Dees stalwart Craig Nettlebeck who had a consistent year with 152/208 @ 73.1%. As Nettlebeck's cheque bounced due to the Swans never paying him through the 90s, fourth placed Amy Jones takes the third place prize money from the Prize Pool, just heading off 2012 Champ Longee who went do-or-die for Freo.

Powerful wins $115.50 and next choice of prize after Sam, and Amy wins $38.50 and the last prize available.

Congratulations to all tipsters in what was a hard fought and bloody hard-to-tip season.

The 2013 Margin Comp was never in doubt as The Lace took the lead early in Round 10 just like Sam and didn't relinquish it. She finished ahead of DrBB by 41 points, who pipped Sam Griggs by 2 points for 2nd. Fourth place went to glen mcphee five goals back and fifth to Andy another ten points in arrears.  However as DrBB and glen were playing for glory only, second and third in the Prize Pool goes to Sam and Andy respectively.

The Lace wins first choice of an Uglybustards T-shirt, Coffee Mug or Executive Pen, Sam has the next choice and Andy the last available prize.

You can see how you went on the Tipping Ladder page if you scroll down to the Margin ladder.

In the Trivia comp it appears that Griggsy left his run too late and the season has closed with 3 rounds for him left to tip. He could've drawn level with perfect 10s in all three, and could've shared with me the first prize of a round the world cruise with Elle McPherson. Rotten Ronnie finished third, gonadbreath 4th and Billycat 5th.

The Grand Final Weekly Prize of $5 was won by Cameron Holterman who was 1 point off the margin, although Easter Junior Bunny did well with the exact margin but wasn't entered into the Prize Pool.

I will be in touch with all prize winners including those who won a weekly prize over the coming weeks, and don't forget Monday 30th September is your last chance to send in your pics for the  Uglybustards "Show Us Your Footy Finals Form" Photo Comp.

And there, for all intents and purposes, you have it.  Take it easy on Mad Monday and see you at pre-season training.
